Cubed is a free, mobile, time trial game where the player is expected to fail – repeatedly. Leaderboards let players see their rank while competing for top spots (and taunting friends via social media).
In each level, morphites are collected so the players can unlock over 70 skins, called morphs, each with different graphical styles and sometimes special abilities. Morphites are also collected through in-game rewards and capturing Cube Souls, the failures of other players. Cube Souls are ghost-like cubes representing the last 8 seconds of a players life.
The goal is to get to the finish line of each of the 30 levels quickly and with the least amount of failures. In each section, new cube types are introduced. Players first need to conquer death (DETH) cubes, then bounce (BNCE) cubes, then vanish (VNSH) cubes, and finally the shooter (SHTR) cubes. These add incremental challenge to the levels and give the player the opportunity to better understand the mechanics of the game before moving on to the next section. Beating Cubed is a challenge. Mastering it is something else entirely.
Cubed started off as a weekend challenge. It was supposed to take two days to make (and to be fair, it was playable in two days, it just wasn't fun). Now, after two years, it's much more fun. It's grown from a little weekend project to something the ADG team is proud of. Plus, it's free, so that's pretty cool too.
